Aidan Kaplan holds an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago, an M.A. in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL) from Middlebury’s Arabic School, and a B.A. in Linguistics from Yale College. He is particularly interested in linguistic variation in Arabic—both across dialects and between registers—and in addressing this variation in the classroom. His research topics have included the work of the nahḍa author Aḥmad Fāris al-Shidyāq and translanguaging pedagogy in the language classroom. He also enjoys translation, where his work has included short stories by Zakaria Tamer. Outside of the classroom, Aidan regularly performs with UChicago’s Middle East Music Ensemble (MEME).
