The University of Chicago invites you to explore topics such as Bob Dylan’s bridges, Plato and Descartes on Halloween, and the archaeology of Sinbad the Sailor at the 44th annual Humanities Day. This free event gathers the UChicago, Chicago communities, and beyond for a day of lively presentations, live music, compelling exhibition tours, inspiring exchanges with world-class faculty, and more!
Attendees can learn about why archaeologists love pottery, about AI and creativity, experimental and serious games, and living sculpture. Ethnomusicologist Philip V. Bohlman presents this year’s keynote session focusing on why doing good in the world motivates music scholars and how they accomplish this especially for people in borderlands. He will be joined on stage at Logan Center Performance Hall with musician colleagues from the “New Budapest Orpheum Society” and the “Chicago Mehfil” to give voice and sound to goodness for moments of precarity in today’s world.
The 44th annual Humanities Day will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. throughout the University of Chicago campus (headquarters in Stuart Hall at 5835 S. Greenwood Ave., Chicago, IL 60637).
The event is open to the public. While the sessions and tours are free, please register to attend for sessions in person or virtually.
Organized by UChicago’s Division of the Humanities, Humanities Day 2024 celebrates what makes the arts and humanities distinctive at the University of Chicago. The event includes support from the Franke Institute for the Humanities, Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures, the Logan Center for the Arts, Neubauer Collegium, and Smart Museum of Art.
