Academic Bio
Joseph Hermiz is a PhD student with a focus on Late Ottoman/Modern Middle Eastern history in the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations at the University of Chicago. Joseph has professional working and research knowledge in Modern Assyrian/Aramaic, Modern Standard Arabic, Modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish and French.
His current research focuses on the political and social history of the Assyrians in the late Ottoman Empire. Joseph previously attended Arizona State University and graduated with a BA in History and Religious Studies. He also completed his Masters degree at the University of Chicago in 2016, writing on the development of modern Assyrian identity in the 19th century.
