We’re pleased to announce that NELC has received a gift from an anonymous donor establishing an endowment fund to support the work of PhD students and Masters students who are pursuing degrees in the field of Islamic Studies. The University of Chicago has been a leading center of Islamic Studies, home to many internationally renowned scholars of Islamic thought and history, such as Gustave von Grunebaum, Marshall Hodgson, Muhsin Mahdi, Halil Inalcik, Wilferd Madelung, Fazlur Rahman, Wadad Kadi, and Fred Donner. This new endowment in the amount of $100,000 is named in honor of NELC alumnus Jonathan Brown (PhD 2006, advised by Wadad Kadi, emerita). The Jonathan A. C. Brown Islamic Studies Research Award Fund will be governed by a committee in NELC which will award the funds annually in support of MA or PhD student research projects or initiatives in any discipline related to Islamic Studies. We are very delighted to receive this gift, which will be used to assist students to maintain the tradition of excellence and innovation.
