يلقي هذا الأسبوع أسعد بدوي ولينة برناوي محاضرة بعنوان "المدينة عامودياً". يقدم لنا المحاضران طرحًا عن حساب "المفكرة الإثنوغرافية السعودية" وهي مبادرة لتوثيق التغيرات الحضرية في المدن السعودية وأثرها على الذاكرة المكانية والتنوع العرقي في المملكة العربية السعودية، كما تركز على الممارسات الاجتماعية والثقافية المختلفة في المجال الحضري وأثر التغيير على مختلف هذه المكونات. بدوي وبرناوي مهتمان بأخلاقيات ممارسة التوثيق ويطرحان الأسئلة التالية: ما هي الطريقة المُثلى لتوثيق المكان؟، وما الذي يؤهلنا للقيام بهذه العملية (خاصةً أن الكاميرات لم تعد معدات باهضة الثمن بل أصبحت في متناول اليد وأداة للحياة اليومية)؟ يركز الجزء الأول من المحاضرة على أهمية التوثيق الجمعي ويتمعن في معنى استخدام الوسائل الاجتماعية للتوثيق. أما الجزء الثاني من المحاضرة، فيتتبع العلاقة ما بين المكان، والجسد، والذاكرة عبر مساءلة الإنتاج الثقافي والراوية الذاتية، والذاكرة المكانية الموروثة في محاولة للإجابة على سؤال جوهري: ما هو المكان، وما الذي يصنعه؟
أسعد بدوي من مواليد المدينة المنورة في السعودية. هو فنان بصري ومفاهيمي مستقل ذو خلفية أكاديمية في الطب والفلسفة وهو من خريجي جامعة خرونينجن في هولندا. بدأ اهتمامه بنشاطات التوثيق الاجتماعي من خلال الاهتمام بتسؤلات فلسفية حول التوثيق وطبيعة الصورة وتطبيق هذه التسؤلات من خلال ملاحظات ويوميات مصوّرة أثناء نشئته في ظل توسعة المسجد الحرام في المدينة المنورة بالمملكة العربية السعودية.
لينة برناوي من مواليد جدة في السعودية. هي طبيبة أطفال لها اهتمام متنامٍ بالأنثروبولوجيا الاجتماعية وعلم الاجتماع الحضري ودراسات المشهد الصوتي. اهتمامها بتوثيق المشهد المحلي صوتيا وبصريا كان استجابة للتغيرات الحضرية السريعة الحاصلة في مدينتها الأم (جدة). خلال ممارستها، تهتم لينة بملاحظة التنوع الثقافي-العرقي للمدينة بمعية حركات التنقل والهجرات الداخلية والخارجية الناتجة عن تغير المشهد الحضري وأثر ذلك كله على الذاكرة المكانية وعلاقة الإنسان بمكانه.

Asaad Badawi and Lina Barnawi will be giving a talk titled: "Vertical view of a city".
In this talk, the speakers will introduce their Instagram account “The Saudi Ethnographic Diary” which is an initiative that documents urban transformation in Saudi cities and this transformation's impact on spatial memory and ethnic diversity in the Saudi Arabia. The initiative also focuses on various social and cultural practices and traces how urban changes have affected these practices. Badawi and Barnawi are interested in the ethics of documentary practices and ask the following questions: What are the best modes of documenting space? What qualifies us to practice documentary practices (especially when cameras are no longer expensive equipment but have become widely available and in fact a tool of everyday life)? The first part of the talk will focus on the importance of collective documentation and examines the use of social media for documentation purposes. The second part of the talk will trace the relationship between space, the body, and memory through thinking about cultural production, subjective narration, and inherited spatial memory, in an attempt to answer the fundamental question: what is space and what creates it?
Asaad Badawi (b. Medina, Saudi Arabia) is a conceptually-driven independent visual artist with academic backgrounds in medicine and philosophy from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. His interest in documentation activities began through philosophical questioning about documentation, the nature of the image, and the application of these questions through video journals and diaries during his upbringing in light of the expansion of the Holy Mosque in Medina, Saudi Arabia.
Lina Barnawi (b. Jeddah, Saudi Arabia) is a pediatrician with a growing interest in urban sociology, social anthropology, and sonic urbanism. Her interest in documenting local sonic and visual memories developed in response to the remaking of the urban scene in Jeddah, her home city. Barnawi's practice observes the ethnocultural diversity of the city alongside the internal and external migrations associated with its change. In her practice, she hospitalizes spatial memory and questions the effect of urban remodeling on the relationship between humans and space.
