هذا الأسبوع يسرنا أن نستضيف الأستاذ أيدن كابلن، الذي سيلقي محاضرة بعنوان بحثاً عن كلمة: جولة في المعاجم والقواميس العربية.
ما علاقة القاموس بالمحيط؟ وهل فعلاً يوجد ثلاثمائة كلمة عربية بمعنى أسد؟ ومن هو هانس فير؟ في هذه المحاضرة سنتطرق إلى تاريخ المعاجم والقواميس العربية، ابتداءً من كتاب العين في القرن الثامن الميلادي ووصولاً إلى "شات جي بي تي". سنعالج دور المعاجم الاجتماعي والثقافي والأكاديمي عبر التاريخ، ونناقش بعض الأمثلة التطبيقية ليستفيد طلاب اللغة العربية في يومنا هذا.

This week we are honored to host Prof. Aidan Kaplan, who will deliver a lecture titled "In search of a word: A journey through Arabic dictionaries and lexicons."
Why is a dictionary like an ocean? Are there really 300 Arabic words for “lion”? And who was Hans Wehr? This talk will present an overview of Arabic lexicography and dictionary-writing, from the 8th century Kitāb al-‘ayn to ChatGPT. We will consider the social, cultural, and academic roles that dictionaries have played over time, and look at some practical examples of how students of Arabic can use dictionaries effectively today.
Prof. Aidan Kaplan is an Assistant Instructional Professor of Arabic at the University of Chicago, where his recent courses include Elementary Arabic, Intermediate Arabic, Media Arabic, and Arabic for STEM. He has an MA in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign language from Middlebury College, an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago, and a BA in Linguistics from Yale. As a language educator, he is passionate about intercultural competence, genre analysis, and learner identity. Outside of the language classroom, you can find him performing in the Middle East Music Ensemble at UChicago and gardening at the KAMII food justice & sustainability program.
