A Book Discussion on "The Routledge Handbook of Persian Literary Translation" by the Editors, Pouneh Shabani Jadidi, Patricia J. Higgins and Michelle Quay
The Routledge Handbook of Persian Literary Translation offers a detailed overview of the field of Persian literature in translation, discusses the development of the field, gives critical expression to research on Persian literature in translation, and brings together cutting-edge theoretical and practical research. The book is divided into the following three parts: (I) Translation of Classical Persian Literature, (II) Translation of Modern Persian Literature, and (III) Persian Literary Translation in Practice.
The chapters of the book are authored by internationally renowned scholars in the field, and the volume is an essential reference for scholars and their advanced students as well as for those researching in related areas and for independent translators of Persian literature.
Pouneh Shabani-Jadidi is Instructional Professor of Persian at the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago. She teaches Persian language and culture as well as media Persian and Persian literary translation. Prior to that, she was Senior Lecturer of Persian Language and Linguistics at McGill University. She has published extensively and is also co-translator, with Patricia J. Higgins, of The Thousand Families: Commentary on Leading Political Figures of Nineteenth Century Iran by Ali Shabani, Island of Bewilderment: A Novel of Modern Iran by Simin Daneshvar, and Hafez in Love: A Novel by Iraj Pezeshkzad, which was awarded the 2021 Lois Roth Persian Translation Prize.
Patricia J. Higgins is University Distinguished Service Professor Emerita at SUNY Plattsburgh. She received a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1974 and taught courses in anthropology and women’s studies, primarily at SUNY Plattsburgh, from 1973 until her retirement in 2011. In addition to an eighteen-month ethnographic study of education and socialization in Tehran, she spent ten months as a Fulbright Lecturer at Tehran University. Her work has been published in Iranian Studies, NWSA Journal, Signs, Human Organization, and Practicing Anthropology and as chapters in several edited volumes.
Michelle Quay is Visiting Lecturer of Persian at Brown University. She has taught Persian Language and Literature at the University of Chicago, Columbia University and the University of Cambridge. As a Gates Cambridge Scholar, she undertook research for her dissertation on professional engagement include the literatures of early Islamic mysticism, gender studies, feminist literary criticism, Persian prosody, and literary translation. Her literary translation work has appeared in such publications as Words Without Borders, Asymptote Journal, World Literature Today, Exchanges and others.
